It will be intriguing to see if writer and creator Tom Rob Smith can add anything original to the table or not as Class of 09 returns us to the family realm of human intelligence and clandestine operations. The story takes place in three different time periods: 2009, when the class of 2009 entered the academy; 2023, the present; where we see them solving crimes and establishing their reputations; and, finally, 2034, when the use of artificial intelligence has completely altered how things are done within the agency.
In the year 2034, the first episode of Class of 09 introduces us to FBI agent Ashely Poet. Ashley had just received her mission briefing when she learned that Amos Garica, an extremist, was still on the run. Ashley had previously known Amos, and Director Michaels had specifically assigned her to the case. After a long absence, Ashley reconnected with Murray, a colleague assigned to the same case. When they went inside, they discovered nobody there. When the FBI agents entered the room, they saw a footage of FBI director Tayo Michaels proclaiming that the United States of America was not only the finest country in the world, but also one of the safest. This was because Amos had installed many televisions in the room. Amos had the impression that he intended to issue a statement and mockingly draw attention to the absurdity of the director’s remarks. The FBI agents stood in that room attempting to figure out what Amos was doing and where he was hiding because they were unable to apprehend him. Despite the fact that Class of 2009 Episode 1 never reveals what exactly occurred to Amos to cause him to feel that way, he appeared to be a guy who had lost faith in the legal system.
Warning: Spoilers
Ashley Joins The FBI Academy.
After working as a nurse for a very long time, Ashley Poet made the decision to enroll in the FBI Academy in 2009. The incident that led Ashley to discover she could cooperate with the FBI was really intriguing. In the past, FBI agents had visited Ashely’s former workplace in search of evidence. They learned that a suspect’s brother was a resident of the same facility and was afflicted with a mental disorder. They were informed that Ashley was close to him and might be able to speak with him to learn something. They were quite impressed with Ashley’s strategies because they allowed her to assist the FBI agent. She was brilliant at making people think she was on their side when, in reality, she was waiting for an opportunity to stab them in the back with a machete. Ashley shared a room with Hour Nazari, an Iranian-born student, who questioned her decision to attend the academy because she didn’t even have the money to buy a uniform. Ashley was approached by Daniel Lennix, another guy, as soon as she entered the room to attend the induction ceremony. Daniel intended to carry on the legacy of his father and grandpa, both of whom had served in the FBI. Tayo Michaels was a member of Ashley’s batch and later rose to the position of director at the company. Michaels believed that Daniel Lennix wouldn’t be able to support himself within the company and would eventually be fired, but that didn’t actually happen.
Ashley Conducts The Biggest Corruption Bust.
Ashley was dispatched to the Philadelphia police department in 2023 as an undercover agent to gather proof against the corrupt policemen. It had been nine months since the start of the operation, known as Blue Score. Ashely was able to gain the trust of the local police officers, who ordinarily wouldn’t admit outsiders into their inner circle. As a result, they accepted her into the group. Ashley had been delivered to the home of an FBI informant. The cops wanted to know whether Ashley was affiliated with the FBI or not. The police chief named Albury came to the conclusion that she could be trusted and was not an FBI agent because neither the snitch nor she recognized each other. When she first joined the family, Ashley used to conceal a recording device in the gun’s magazine and gathered as much information as she could. The other FBI agents were interested to learn how she had broken into the tight-knit group when no one had ever been able to accomplish that before. Ashley claimed that she simply didn’t come off as arrogant and didn’t give them the impression that she was desperate to become a member of their family. Ashley was asked to lead the team when police officers had to be arrested. She didn’t understand why they were making her do it because it wasn’t how things were often done and going between the individuals she had tricked was incredibly risky. We learned later in Class of 09 Episode 1 that she was sent with the arrest crew for ulterior purposes by her superiors.
What Did Lennix Ask Ashley To Do?
Lennix had joined the FBI in 2023 and had since been promoted to associate executive assistant director, contrary to what his contemporaries believed. Ashley should go with the team to arrest the police officers, according to Lennix’s orders. Lennix explained that he wanted to take advantage of the situation by making Ashley appear as though she was exhausted from conducting strenuous fieldwork so that he could then assign her to a desk job. Ashley was outraged because she didn’t understand why he had put her life in danger. The desk job was a ruse; in actuality, he wanted Ashley to spy on Hour Nazari, her roommate from the Class of 2009. Ashley became enraged once more as she realized that she had no choice than to spy on one of her own people. If she had declined, Lennix would have offered the job to someone else, which would have been a worse situation.
Once more, the story takes us to the year 2034, when Tayo Michaels is arguing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee that his 10-year term should be extended by an additional five years. Tayo said that he had made several fundamental changes to the way that business was conducted at the agency and that he still needed time to foster his innovations. Amos Garcia unexpectedly showed up at Ashley’s house during the end of Class of 09 Episode 1, and before the FBI shot him dead, he made a few cryptic remarks that gave the impression that he knew something the agency didn’t want the public to know. Before the FBI entered the room, Amos Garcia had thrown Ashley something resembling a card. Ashley took it, but she kept it a secret from the agents. We shall learn in the future episodes why Ashley let Amos down and why he believed she had turned into a puppet in the hands of the legal system. We would also eventually learn the reason Hour Nazari was being accused of wrongdoing, including whether the accusation was unfounded and stemmed only from the fact that she was Iranian or whether there was solid proof to support it.
